چکیده

Scott Hogg & Associates Ltd. have completed the development of a 3-axis, helicopter towed, aeromagnetic gradiometer. The towed bird is a complete airborne system with 4 cesium sensors, radar altimeter, pitch, roll and yaw measurement, a 3-axis magnetic fluxgate and a GPS positioning system. The system is designed to provide accurate geo-referenced magnetic gradients; G-east, G-north and Gvertical. The system was purpose built to meet the measurement requirements of our advanced mapping software system GT-GRID and other processes that use gradient quantitatively. This paper reviews the technical background of this airborne system and the related processing software that can benefit.

Magnetic Sensor Operation Onboard a UUV: Magnetic Noise Investigation using a Total-Field Gradiometer

To operate a magnetic sensor on board an Unmanned Underwater Vehicle (UUV), it is necessary to provide a means for compensating magnetic noise from a variety of sources. In previous applications involving passively towed platforms, the noise arises from the magnetic fields due to eddy currents and magnetic polarization changes occurring due to rotation of the platform in the earth’s magnetic fi...

Development of Airborne Magnetic and Electromagnetic Systems for Mapping and Detection of UXO and Other Shallow Metallic Objects

Airborne geophysical systems have been in use since 1943 (Hildenbrand et al., 1990). These systems used airborne magnetometers for submarine detection and geophysical mapping. Airborne electromagnetic systems were introduced in the 1950s (Barringer et al., 1990) for mineral exploration. These early magnetic and electromagnetic systems were mounted on fixed wing aircraft. In the 1960s helicopter...

High Resolution Marine Magnetic Survey of Shallow Water Littoral Area

The purpose of this paper is to present a system developed for detection andaccurate mapping of ferro-metallic objects buried below the seabed in shallow waters. Thesystem comprises a precise magnetic gradiometer and navigation subsystem, both installedon a non-magnetic catamaran towed by a low-magnetic interfering boat. In addition wepresent the results of a marine survey of a near-shore area ...

SeaTEM – A New Airborne Electromagnetic System for Bathymetric Mapping and Seafloor Characterisation

The potential for using airborne electromagnetic (AEM) methods for measuring water depth has been demonstrated from data acquired from several surveys over shallow coastal waters in Australia. These AEM surveys were undertaken using both fixed-wing time-domain and helicopter (time and frequency domain) commercial systems. Some survey data was also interpreted to delineate the bedrocksediment bo...

Direct string magnetic gradiometer for space applications

Recently, a novel Direct String Magnetic Gradiometer (DSMG) has been developed, where a vibrating wire, driven by an AC current, is used as a single sensitive element. It is designed to directly measure the local off-diagonal components of the magnetic gradient tensor, Bxz, Byz and Bxy, provided the distance to an object creating magnetic anomalies is much larger than the length of the string. ...
